The history of Winter Springs – and all of Florida – travels back to many owners from many different countries. In the 1700’s, Florida went from being Spanish-owned, to British-owned, and then went back to the Spanish roots. All of Winter Springs was owned by a wealthy New York merchant, Moses Levy. With his savvy business sense in lumber and trading, he was able to acquire thousands of acres of land grants from the Spanish before the U.S. officially acquired the state in 1821. After the acquisition, businessmen and land owners continued to try to get their hands on a portion of the land grants so they could also call Winter Springs their own. While this history goes back to the 1700’s, Winter Springs didn’t start really thriving until after the 1830’s.

Just like many of the surrounding cities, Winter Springs started thriving through business. What had attracted people at first were the opportunities to grow crops and to be able to haul people and goods. Winter Springs has only officially had its name since 1972 and is now the largest city in Seminole County. What used to be a small village of just 600 people has turned into a flourishing city that is urbanized while still providing visitors the oldtown feel that everyone loves. With a little over 33,000 people, Winter Springs can still be considered a small town when compared to other cities in Florida but its constant developments and modernizations, it’s easy to see why people are flocking there!
The business sense has also never left Winter Springs as up-scale neighborhoods and a better quality of life are popping up daily. Visitors can now expect to nicer homes than what had been built in the 1970’s and before. They can also count on seeing expansive shopping centers, retail spaces, and smaller specialty stores that makes living in a small town very doable.
